Trash to Treasure: Recycled Holiday Gifts!
I remember when a friend of mine gifted me with one of these treasures in high school. I instantly loved it and wanted to copy it. I loved the simplicity of it and its functionality.
The holiday season is a financial stretch for most families. I struggle every year to get something meaningful for my loved ones, while not breaking the bank. I know I can't afford to spend a lot, and I know they would feel bad if I did.
This year I decided to include some Cookie Ingredient Jars in addition to my usual holiday baking. Rather than go out and buy new mason jars to make them, I decided to save more money by using glass jars I already had at home. You can utilize something you would normally toss out, while checking a gift off your checklist!
I started out with the pickle jar but couldn't find the lid. I switched over to the Marinara jar and the ingredients barely fit! Make sure to use a large enough jar for everything. First you want to thoroughly clean your jar and peel off the label. Make this part easy by peeling it off in the sink with the soapy water. If you simply wet it and try to peel it will dry too fast to get the whole thing off.
Layer your ingredients in. Recipes with three or more dry ingredients look best. I used this Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Recipe and added some white chocolate chips for variety. You can make this even more festive by adding green or red chocolate chips. In the interest of using only what I had at home, I stuck with the contents of my pantry.
I covered up the marinara text on the lid with a plain white sticker, tied it up with raffia and added a gift tag. Make sure to include the recipe on the tag! All in all this gift took me 20 minutes to put together, I saved something from the landfill and I know it will make a gift someone will enjoy!
